2016 Forum

The Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center for Energy and Climate Change was honored to host the first annual Berkeley-Tsinghua Energy Forum on Friday, 21 October, 2016 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Professor Gao Hong, Vice Provost of Tsinghua University, and Dr. Horst Simon of Berkeley Lab gave an opening welcome.

Attendees from the three collaborating instututions—Berkeley Lab, Tsinghua University, and the UC Berkeley—and guests from other research institutions, government agencies, and foundations, met for a day of panel talks and roundtable discussion on key energy-related issues, including:

  • Transition to a clean and efficient energy system
  • The future of climate policy
  • Research priorities for the Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center

Afternoon small-group discussions were held on specific research topics, including:

  • Non-CO2 emissions
  • Power sector reform
  • Economics of the transition to an energy efficient system
  • Smart Grid technologies and implementation
  • Energy and water

Meeting participants agreed to develop joint research projects within these five areas, and will begin to exchange postdoctoral fellows and PhD students in 2017.
