BTJRC's Dr. Jiang Lin delivered a keynote speech at the International Forum on Sustainable Solutions for New Era of Ecological Civilization on December 18, 2017 at Tsinghua University. Dr. Lin presented research results on potential impacts of electricity market reforms in Guangdong Province, from a study led by Berkeley Lab's China Energy Group and the Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center (BTJRC).
BTJRC's Dr. Jiang Lin was invited to participate in the 2017 AGM’s Forum on Green Development Transformation in China and The World. His presentation, New Era, New Solutions for Green Prosperity, discussed research findings on how China could support its stated goals for green transformation of its economy by adopting clean energy technologies and more efficient rules for its emerging power market.
On August 14, 2017, National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration, along with 14 other national ministries, jointly released a policy directive on controlling coal-fired power capacity until 2020. This document sets a target of limiting total coal power capacity within 1100 GW by 2020 and requires to stop or postpone 150 GW of coal power projects during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020). This newly released document shows Chinese government’s determination in reducing the risks of excess investment in coal power projects.
In 2015, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and UC Berkeley announced a partnership with Tsinghua University in Beijing. They formed the Berkeley Tsinghua Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate Change, a center helping to develop scientifically based clean energy solutions and the next generation of leaders to champion those solutions.
The Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center for Energy and Climate Change (BTJRC) was honored to host the first annual Berkeley Tsinghua Energy Forum on Friday, 21 October, 2016 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Professor Gao Hong, Vice Provost of Tsinghua University (Tsinghua), and Dr. Horst Simon of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) gave an opening welcome.
China's electricity demand will continue to grow over the next decade, so increasing power plants may be needed. But if you can not predict future demand in a scientific and transparent way, building more power plants can lead to waste of investment and generate a lot of stranded assets, which will eventually be borne by the electricity payers or taxpayers.
In California, a number of regulators work together to take charge of infrastructure planning and investment processes. The entire power planning and procurement process is transparent and allows public participation. Taking into account the power supply and demand side of the resources, making the California power industry to efficient, low-carbon, sustainable direction to accelerate the transformation.
On May 10, 2016, the Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate Change (BT-JRC) was formally launched at the Faculty Club on the UC Berkeley campus. UC Berkeley Chancellor Dirks, Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong, and Berkeley Lab Director Witherell were all present and offered their strong support to this joint initiative between UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University of China, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to develop science-based solutions to tackle the challenges of climate change.
