Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate Change formally launched

On May 10, 2016, the Berkeley-Tsinghua Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate Change (BTJRC) was formally launched at the Faculty Club on the UC Berkeley campus. UC Berkeley Chancellor Dirks, Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong, and Berkeley Lab Director Witherell were all present and offered their strong support to this joint initiative between UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University of China, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) to develop science-based solutions to tackle the challenges of climate change. In addition to joint research projects, the BTJRC will also explore education and training program for next-generation leaders, and communication and outreach programs.

Researchers from the three institutions presented the results from the first joint research project on analysis of US and Chinese national climate change mitigation commitments under the Paris Agreement. In the afternoon, they also participated in four breakout sessions to further explore joint research topics on energy and climate policy, smart grids and integration of renewables, climate modeling, and low emissions combustion technologies. Berkeley Lab Deputy Director Horst Simon gave a briefing on the wide variety of energy-related research at Berkeley Lab and showcased the Advanced Light Source facility to President Qiu.
